Overcoming Unrealistic Expectations of Yourself

LISTEN: APPLE PODCASTS | SPOTIFY | STITCHER

Feeling overwhelmed by the constant need to be perfect in every aspect of your life? You’re not alone. At some point, we’ve all been there, right?

In this episode of the Embrace Your Real podcast, I dive into the unrealistic pressures we place on ourselves and the toll it takes on our mental and physical well-being. We’ll also talk about why it's impossible to give 100% to everything all at once—and why it's absolutely okay to let some things slide, why excelling in one area often means compromising in another, and why that’s perfectly fine and so much more!

I also discuss:

2:54 All aspect of our life is not perfect

4:25 The constant state of progress

5:16 Why being consistent isn’t being perfect

And more!

[00:00:32] Hello and welcome back to another bonus episode. Today I want to dive into something that I think many of you need to hear and honestly, myself included. I want to talk about the pressure that we put on ourselves to be perfect in every single area of our lives. I see it in myself, I see it in my loved ones, and I see it in all of you because I talk to you on a regular basis. This unrealistic expectation that we can give 100% to every single part of our lives and every single section of our lives. But guess what? That is not only impossible, it's unsustainable, and it's not healthy. And so that's why in today's episode, I just want to encourage you and also convince you that it is okay and explain why and what to do if you're feeling this way. Before we dive in, though, I wanted to I wanted to share this super sweet overview. It comes from. All right, so without further ado, let's dive into today's bonus episode. I kind of want to give you just an example, right? When your fitness routine is dialed in, you're crushing your workouts. You're feeling strong. It's easy to expect that everything else should be dialed in as well. Like your home should be perfectly clean. Every meal is as gourmet, macro, balanced masterpiece. All of your relationships are in check, but life doesn't always work that way. When you're giving your all in one area, something else often has to give a little and that is okay. Think about it. Let's say you're pushing hard at work. You're focusing on a big project. You're trying to meet a deadline. Chances are your meal prep might slip. You might grab something quick and easy instead of sticking to your usual nutrition. And you know what? That is perfectly fine. It does not mean that you're failing. It means that you are human. Because here's the thing when we struggle in one area of our life, it's usually because we are excelling in another part of our life. So maybe your kitchen looks like a tornado went through it, but your body feels strong. You're feeling energized because you have been prioritizing your workouts and your nutrition. Or perhaps maybe you had a week where your nutrition was not on point, but you made incredible strides in your career, or you made amazing memories with your family that was in town. I want you to celebrate that. Recognize where you are putting in the work and give yourself credit for that. Don't let those wins go unnoticed. So when you feel like you're failing or you're struggling with one area of your life, I want you to use that as a sign to figure out where in the other areas of your life are you excelling, and I want you to take time to celebrate that in terms of building the body that you want. Because I know that's why so many of you guys tune into the podcast. One of the most important things to remember is that you cannot always expect that you are going to see results or have progress day after day, week after week, month after month. It's actually not normal to be in this constant state of progress. Just like life, our fitness journey has ebbs and flows. There's going to be times where you're making gains, you're feeling unstoppable, and there's going to be times where you feel like progress seems to stall. And that's totally normal. Think of your fitness path like a mountain range. There's peaks, there's valleys, there's ups, there's downs. The path itself isn't linear. There's moments of challenge, yes, but there's also moments of success. And the key to focus on is to be consistent, but consistent in a way that allows for imperfection. You guys know I always talk about this, but it's so important that you are consistent, imperfectly rather than trying to be perfect inconsistently. Consistent doesn't mean perfect. It means that you're showing up even when it's hard, even when it's messy, even when it doesn't look like the way that you think. It should. And so all that to say. I know that it's easy to get caught up in the idea that we have to be perfect, but perfection is not. The goal progresses and progress doesn't happen in a straight line. If we're moving forward, even if it feels like just a little bit. I want to encourage you that you are on the right track, so give yourself some grace. Allow yourself to not be 100% all the time in every aspect of your life. When you find yourself struggling in one area, just remind yourself it's likely because you are shining in another aspect of your life. Acknowledge that, celebrate that, and know that it is all part of the process. Your journey is uniquely yours and it doesn't. And it shouldn't have to look like anybody else's. So I want to encourage you to keep showing up. Keep doing the best that you can with what you have. And remember, it's okay to be a little messy, it's okay to be a little imperfect and a whole lot of human. And lastly, remember, the most beautiful things in life come from the imperfect moments. Embrace them and learn to love them. Because trust me when I say one day you will miss them. If you love this episode, I know you will also love episode 452 Struggling to Love Your Body? Here's three underrated reminders. I will go ahead and link that in the show. Notes that you can easily go tune in there, but that is all that I have for today's episode. I love you so dang much. I mean it and I'll talk to you in the next one. [00:06:43]

[00:06:56] All right, sister. [00:06:57]

[00:06:57] That's all I got for you. [00:06:58]

[00:06:58] Today. But I have two things. [00:07:00]

[00:07:01] That I need you to do. [00:07:01]
